Side pain happens frequently during pregnancy. It is generally not a cause for alarm.

Causes of Side Pain During Pregnancy

Round Ligament- The round ligaments help to support the uterus. During pregnancy your uterus expands and places strain on your round ligament. This can produce a great deal of discomfort with sharp twinges between your hip bone and uterus. It can occur on one side or both sides.

Ectopic Pregnancy- ectopic pregnancy is when the embryo implants outside of the uterus. If it is early in your pregnancy and you are having pain on one side of your abdomen accompanied by spotting or bleeding, contact your doctor.

Hormones- your hormones are running high during pregnancy. The role of some of these hormones is to relax your muscles and tendons to prepare your body for childbirth. As your muscles relax they can become strained more easily causing pain in your sides.

Postural Changes- your baby is growing inside, stretching your uterus and abdomen and realigning your normal posture. This can cause discomfort in your back, hips and sides.

Improper bending- heavy lifting, twisting, bending and prolonged sitting can cause your sides to hurt.

Stress- stress adds tension to your body and can contribute to pain anywhere.

Preventing Side Pain During Pregnancy

The following are things you can do to reduce side pain:

Wear good shoes. Heels and shoes that offer no support can contribute to discomfort all over your body.

Practice safe lifting and bending. To lower your body, bend at the knees instead of the waist. Use your thigh muscles to push yourself back up without using your back.

Try as pregnancy support belt.

Be sure to exercise regularly. Movement eases many pains.

Do pregnancy yoga or gentle stretching.

Be sure you are getting adequate calcium and magnesium in your diet.

Drink plenty of fluids- dehydration can cause muscle cramps.

Practice good posture- stand with your hips and pelvis tucked in and your shoulders back and head up.

Use a pregnancy pillow at night when you sleep.

Treatment for Side Pain During Pregnancy

Use ice or heat.

Take acetaminophen for pain.

See a chiropractor, massage therapist or acupuncturist

Use a pregnancy belt or support device.

Have your partner help you with hands on techniques such as those in the Pregnancy Pain Relief book.

When You Should Call Your Doctor

Your side pain is very intense.

Your side pain is getting increasingly worse.

You have rhythmic pain that feels like menstrual cramps.

You are having spotting or bleeding that accompanies the pain.

Your body is undergoing tremendous change, as are your thoughts as you prepare for your new child. This physical and emotional stress frequently gives rise to shoulder pain.

Causes of Shoulder Pain During Pregnancy

Breast changes- During pregnancy your breasts are constantly changing and growing. Their weight will increase significantly. The average breast weighs approximately 7 ounces. By the end of pregnancy each breast can way 14 to 28 ounces or more. Your chest and shoulders must hold up this new weight and size which can lead to shoulder tension, soreness and pain.

Stress- Stress is a huge factor in shoulder pain. The shoulders are one of the first places to feel tight and sore when you are under pressure.

Poor Posture- Slouching and rounded shoulders can contribute to shoulder pain. It is something to continuously be aware of, especially with breast growth. You may find the extra weight pulling you forward before you think about it.

Preventing Shoulder Pain During Pregnancy

Be sure to wear a good, supportive bra. This can be truly invaluable in preventing shoulder pain.

Get regular massages.

Exercise regularly.

Practice good posture- keep your shoulders back and head up.

Migraine headaches are completely different from normal headaches. They are much more severe and intense, generally accompanied by throbbing pain, and visual disturbances such as blurred vision and flashing lights, and often times nausea and vomiting.

Pregnancy has the potential to either intensify or alleviate the occurrence of migraines. Some women who experience migraines before pregnancy may find them to worsen during the first trimester and then improve during the second trimester.

Is it Dangerous to Have Migraines During Pregnancy?

Migraines are not considered dangerous for your baby, but you should talk to your doctor if you are experiencing migraines or prolonged headaches. High blood pressure and other disorders associated with pregnancy can cause similar symptoms which need treatment.

Talk to your doctor before taking any migraine medications during pregnancy. Some of them have been associated with fetal abnormalities and should be avoided.

Migraine Triggers

Sometimes it is possible to pinpoint things that trigger migraines and help avoid them, thereby reducing the number of attacks. Try keeping a headache diary documenting what you have eaten in the preceding 24 hours.

Everyone is different, but frequent triggers include the following:

Stress

Heat or Cold (weather changes)

Hormones

Fatigue

Flashing lights

Loud noises

Smoke

Changes in blood sugar

Chocolate and Carob

Cheese, especially aged cheeses

Coffee

Refined Sugar

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

Nitrates (found in processed meat like hot dogs and bacon)

Sulfites (preservative in dried fruit and salads)

Artificial sweeteners

Smoked fish

Things that are fermented or pickled (like soy sauce or sauerkraut)

Fruits such as bananas, papaya, avocado and citrus

Certain beans

Nuts

Preventing Migraines

Be sure you are getting adequate magnesium in your diet.

Practice relaxation techniques regularly.

Be sure you are getting adequate rest.

Get regular exercise.

Be sure you are drinking enough water.

Use pregnancy pain relief techniques to keep the tension in your body down.

Use biofeedback techniques.

Practice meditation.

Practice prenatal yoga.

Treatment for Migraines During Pregnancy

Unfortunately the best medications for migraines are generally contraindicated during pregnancy. Below are some tips to help ease the intensity:

Apply ice packs to your head and base of your neck. Sometimes a cold washrag will work.

Sleep- rest in a dark, quiet room.

See a massage therapist or acupuncturist.

Take a cold shower.

Massage your temples and the base of your head.

Try using acupressure on yourself.

When You Should Call Your Doctor

This is your first migraine.

You have had a migraine for more than a day or returns frequently.

You are having blurred vision.

Your headache is accompanied by fever.

You are having spotting or bleeding.

Round ligament pain can be a scary thing the first time you experience it. It is characterized by sharp pain that radiates in the abdominal, hip or groin area. This pain can can be on one side or both sides. Though it can be alarming, as it is quite sharp, round ligament pain should not create cause for concern.

This type of pelvic pain is caused by stretching or spasm in the round ligaments. The round ligament’s role is to help support the uterus. During pregnancy, the expansion of the uterus is enormous. This places a great deal of strain on the round ligaments as well as other uterine ligaments. As your uterus grows these ligaments can become over stretched or spasm, causing sudden sharp pelvic pain.

Pregnant women often worry that this acute pain indicates a severe problem. Your mind races fearing that something is wrong with the baby, or that you have appendicitis or some other serious condition. Generally, this is not the case.

Do be alert, however, if you are having fever, chills, painful urination, difficulty walking, or bleeding. These symptoms could indicate a more serious condition.

Round ligament pain is generally brief in duration, causing fast, sharp twinges that are short-lived. These pains may be recurring, but the duration of the pain is short. Sudden movements such as coughing, sneezing or laughing activate these muscles and can be painful.

Changing positions too quickly can also result in these sharp, shooting pains. This type of pain frequently occurs in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

It may be helpful to use gentle fascial stretching Pregnancy Pain Relief techniques, they are powerful yet simple and safe for most any pregnancy situation.

If you are suffering with round ligament pain, you may be able to get relief by bringing your knees up toward your chest. This will take some of the strain off of your over-stretched and spasming ligaments. If that does not provide relief, try lying on the side opposite the pain. You may also find it comforting to take a warm bath, or apply warm compresses to the painful area.

Try not to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Staying in one position for too long may aggravate the pain or allow it to occur more frequently. It is important to move more slowly. When you are changing to a sitting position, sit down slowly and gradually. The same is true for when you are rising from a sitting position, get up slowly. This will help decrease spasms and pain. Slowing down your movements will allow your body more time to transition comfortably.

If you feel a sneeze or cough coming on, or if you are going to laugh, try to bring your knees up toward your chest a little bit. This could help prevent the pain from beginning.

It is not unusual for round ligament pain to be problematic until your baby is born. In rare cases, round ligament pain may ease on its own. While it is certainly a discomfort, it is not a permanent condition. Once your baby is born, this pain should disappear completely.

Performing regular exercise and stretching can be valuable in keeping your body loose and more comfortable. Prenatal yoga is an excellent exercise for pregnancy that will help to gently stretch your body and may prevent a variety of pains.

Use of a pregnancy pillow may help take the strain off of your ligaments at night. If you do not have a pregnancy pillow, try placing a pillow between your knees and under your belly for extra support. These small things may go a long way for alleviating discomfort.

Don’t suffer another moment with round ligament pain.

Whether you have back, hip, chest, groin pain, pelvic, or rib pain due to pregnancy, this book covers what you need to do to get great results.

Low back pain or lumbar is extremely common during pregnancy. As a matter of fact, 50-70% of pregnant women experience back pain at some point during their pregnancy. Although it can occur at any point between conception and childbirth, it is most frequently troublesome late in a pregnancy. There are things that can be done to help manage back pain.

1. Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy

Implantation- Many women experience low back pain during early pregnancy when the newly formed embryo implants into your uterus. This can cause aching pain and cramping in your back.

Hormonal Changes- When you are expecting, your body produces a wide variety of hormones, one of which is called relaxin. Relaxin’s job is to relax and loosen the tissues of your body in order to help prepare for childbirth. This causes shifting of the joints and laxity in the muscles and ligaments that normally support your body and your spine, resulting in discomfort.

Changes to Your Posture- Your body is growing and changing each day. Your belly is growing and stretching along with the fetus that is inside. This causes the muscles and bones in your body to readjust in new and different ways. Your spine curves backward to compensate for a shift in your center of gravity as your abdomen protrudes. This can cause pressure and tension in your spine.

Weight gain- As your baby grows your weight increases and your back gets strained from supporting the extra weight.
Improper Bending- Heavy lifting, twisting, bending, and prolonged sitting can make your back hurt. You can prevent back pain by being aware of how you stand, sit and move.

Stress- Stress adds tension to the body and can contribute to pain anywhere. With the extra pressure that pregnancy places on your spine, the back is a very common place to experience stress tension. Try out some of our stress relieving tips.

2. Preventing Lower Back Pain or Lumbar Pain Before it Begins

The following are things you can do to reduce the amount of lower back pain you are experiencing. Sometimes it is not possible to eliminate pain completely, but the following tips can help dramatically.

Practice good posture- Stand with your hips and pelvis tucked in and your shoulders back and head up.

When sleeping or resting, lie on your side with your knees and hips bent. Try placing a pillow between your knees and one under your belly. This can help take pressure off your low back. There are also some great pregnancy pillows that can help make you more comfortable.

Wear good shoes. Heels and unsupportive shoes can contribute to spinal discomfort.

When you sit, elevate your feet slightly. Try to take breaks from sitting at least every half hour. Don’t cross your legs.

Practice safe lifting and bending. To lower your body, bend at the knees instead of the waist. Use your thigh muscles to push yourself back up without using your back.

Try a pregnancy support belt.

If you will be standing for extended periods of time, try to keep one of your feet elevated on a low stool.

Exercise regularly to support and strengthen your back.

Pregnancy massage (prenatal massage) is excellent for keeping your body loose and free of pain.

Get your partner or friend to practice hands on pregnancy pain relief techniques on your body.

Chiropractic visits can help prevent back pain.

Acupunture can help keep you balanced and prevent you from aching.

Prenatal Yoga can help keep your body loose and comfortable.

Be sure you are getting adequate Calcium and Magnesium in your diet.

Drink plenty of fluids.

3. Treatment for Lower Back Pain or Lumbar Pain During Pregnancy

Use ice or heat.

Take acetaminophen for pain.

See a chiropractor, massage therapist, or acupuncturist.

Use a pregnancy belt or support device.

When lying down use a pregnancy pillow.

Have your partner help you with hands on techniques such as those in the Pregnancy Pain Relief Book.

Herbal Medicine.

Take a warm bath.

Why Your Low Back Hurts During Pregnancy, and How to Get Relief

Backpain in pregnant women is a very common complaint. In fact, as many as 80% of pregnant women will have back pain at some time during their pregnancy. There are several types of back pain that occur among expectant mothers, but low back pain is the most common. But why does your low back hurt during pregnancy?

This article will explore the causes of back pain in pregnant women, discuss the different types of back pain that occur during pregnancy, and provide information about what can be done to prevent and relieve prenatal back pain.

Backache can occur for a number of reasons, which can be reduced to two main issues: hormones and postural changes.

During pregnancy, your body produces a veritable cocktail of hormones. Among these is a hormone called relaxin. The primary role of relaxin is to loosen the joints and ligaments in your body in order to help them stretch and widen. This allows your body to more easily make room for your baby inside of your pelvis. And, when the time comes for your baby to be born, the hormone relaxin will have helped the joints of your pelvis relax and stretch enough for your baby’s shoulders to pass through your pelvic bones.

But what does all that have to do with low back pain? Well, unfortunately, your body is unable to isolate which ligaments and joints will stretch and loosen, and this happens on a broad scale throughout your body. As the ligaments and muscles which normally support your spine become lax, it can result in some instability in the spine, which can result in aching and pain.

As your uterus expands and your baby grows, it also causes immense changes in your posture, which can result in an aching back. As your abdomen and uterus stretch, it puts a greater strain on your back muscles.

Your center of gravity is changing. Your abdomen is shifting out and down, and your spine curves backward to try to compensate for this shift. As a result, your back muscles become sore and tired, and more prone to injury and strain.

There are two common types of low back pain in pregnancy, lumbar pain and posterior pelvic pain.

Lumbar pain is similar to the kind of back pain you may have experienced before you became pregnant. Lumbar pain is felt in the low back, at the level of, or slightly higher than, your waist. It can also result in pain that radiates to your legs.

Lumbar pain can be triggered by sitting or standing for extended periods of time or by repetitive lifting.

Posterior pelvic pain is low back pain that is experienced in the back of the pelvis, below the waist, and/or across the tailbone or sacrum. It can also be felt in the buttocks, on one or both sides, or in the back of the thighs. You may also have pubic pain. Posterior pelvic pain occurs four times more frequently than lumbar pain during pregnancy.

Posterior pelvic pain can be aggravated by bending, twisting, rolling, climbing stairs, and prolonged leaning forward such as occurs when you sit at a computer for extended periods of time.

Posterior pelvic pain is often mistaken as sciatica. When you have sciatica, it causes pain not only in the low back, hips, buttocks, and thighs, but also in the legs. With sciatica, the leg pain is generally more severe than the back pain, and is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or pin-pricking sensations. This pain and numbness generally radiates all the way into the toes. Numbness may also extend to the groin and genital areas.

Sciatica is generally caused by a herniated or bulging disk.

Your risk of low back pain during pregnancy increases if you have had back pain before becoming pregnant or during a previous pregnancy. You also have an increased risk of prenatal back pain if you are carrying twins or are overweight.

In order to maintain a healthy back during pregnancy, it is essential to engage in a regular exercise regimen. Exercise is essential for controlling and avoiding back pain. When your muscles are weak and inflexible, you are more likely to hurt. Regular exercise will stretch and strengthen your muscles and ligaments to better support your back and prevent pregnancy back ache from occurring.

Pregnancy yoga, also known as prenatal yoga, is a wonderful exercise for pregnancy. It will help to both strengthen as well as stretch and loosen your body. At the same time, it helps relieve backaches.

Walking and swimming are two other preferred exercises, which are excellent for pregnancy. Walking will help keep your legs and hips strong and flexible. Swimming allows you to have a full body work out with minimal stress and strain on the body. Aquatic exercises are highly recommended for pregnant women, and are especially gentle and easy on the body. Avoid any activity which is high impact, or overstretches your body. This can aggravate back pain.

Specific exercises to alleviate low back pain during pregnancy include pelvic tilt exercises, Kegel exercises, back stretches, hamstring stretches, chest stretches, and wall squats. For detailed information on how to do these stretches and exercises, you can visit http://www.pregnancymomandbaby.com/backexercisesforpregnancy.html

In addition to exercises, it is especially important to be aware of your posture, and how you are sitting or standing. Good posture means standing with your hips and pelvis tucked in, keeping your shoulders back and down, and holding your head up.

Sitting for long periods of time can cause your back to hurt. If you must sit for long periods of time, try to take frequent breaks from sitting (at least every half an hour). Also, when you are sitting, try elevating your feet slightly and avoid crossing your legs.

If you must stand on your feet for long periods of time, try resting one foot on a low stool and change positions often.

When you are pregnant, it is especially important to practice safe lifting and bending, to prevent undue strain on your back. When bending over, bend at the knees instead of the waist. Use your thigh muscles to push yourself back up instead of your back muscles. If you need to lift or move something heavy, try to ask for help.

Try to wear low heeled shoes and shoes that have a good arch support. High heeled shoes can aggravate back pain.

The sleeping position most friendly for prenatal back pain sufferers is side sleeping, preferably on your left side. Try sleeping with your knees and hips bent. Try placing a pillow between your knees, and one under your belly for support. You may want to try a pregnancy pillow. There are a wide variety of pillows available on the market that can help in alleviating back discomfort.

Try to keep stress in check. Meditation and breathing exercises, regular exercise, quality sleep, and adequate nutrition can all help keep you feeling more relaxed and at your best.

Some expectant mothers find that a warm (not hot) bath helps to alleviate low back pain. Try adding Epsom salts to your bathwater. The magnesium in the Epsom salt is especially helpful at soothing tired and aching muscles.

Take extra time to rest and take care of yourself. While exercise is important, so is rest. Make sure you get adequate rest and sleep, and don’t over-tax your aching back. This can help keep pregnancy back pain in check.

Massage therapy, chiropractic care, and acupuncture may help comfort you when you need immediate relief from back pain.

Some women find that the use of a pregnancy support belt helps take pressure off of their back. Always talk to your doctor first.

If you are pregnant with back pain that is very intense, or your pain is rhythmic and feels like menstrual cramps, you should contact your health care provider for advice. Also, if you are having numbness you should always contact your health care provider.

A dull backache could be a sign of preterm labor. If you are concerned about your pain, you should contact your health care provider for further evaluation.

Many women suffer with pregnancy back pain at night. This type of night back pain in pregnancy is called nocturnal back pain. You may have it on its own, or concurrently with low back or sacroiliac pain.

There are a couple of different theories as to why night back pain develops during pregnancy. One theory is that it is caused by muscle fatigue from being active all day. By the end of the day, your body becomes more fatigued, and thus you feel more discomfort toward the evening hours.

The second theory is that nocturnal back pain is due to water retention. This can lead to edema and an increased volume of blood. This additional water in the body can place pressure on the spinal nerves and muscles, resulting in backaches.

Some women have very severe back pain while sleeping during their pregnancy. The most important thing you can do is to avoid sleeping on your back during pregnancy. Lying on your back, or in the supine position, compresses major arteries and veins, namely the inferior vena cava and the aorta. This decreases circulation and allows fluid pressure to build up in the pelvis, which places pressure on the spinal nerves.

As your fetus grows, it also puts more and more pressure on your arteries and veins. The farther along you are in your pregnancy, the more important it is to avoid sleeping on your back. The healthiest sleeping position for you and your baby is on your sides. Resting on your left side will place the least amount of pressure on your spine.

In addition to side sleeping, supporting the uterus can help alleviate night back pain. To properly support your uterus, lay on your side with pillows under your abdomen and between your legs. This will help to support your uterus and keep your spine in a neutral position. There are several wonderful pregnancy pillows that can help to make sleeping much more comfortable.

It is also important to make special efforts during the day to adjust your posture in ways that will help prevent muscle fatigue. Be sure to take frequent breaks from standing or sitting. If you must sit or stand for long periods of time, elevate one foot on a low stool or foot rest. Also, wear good, supportive shoes, and avoid wearing high heeled shoes, which place extra strain on the

It is also possible to manage pregnancy back pain at night by maintaining a regular exercise program. Regular exercise will help strengthen and support the spine, therefore helping to minimize strain and muscle fatigue. Exercise and postural adjustments will help to minimize night time back pain, but may not completely prevent it.

Many women find pain relief in alternative approaches such as acupuncture and massage therapy, though this relief may be only temporary. There are a variety of gentle hands on techniques that can be performed at home, which are also beneficial for relieving pregnancy related back pain.

Unfortunately, anti-inflammatory medications such as motrin, advil, and aspirin are contraindicated during pregnancy. The only pain reliever considered safe during pregnancy is acetaminophen.

Soaking in a hot tub or whirlpool is not recommended during pregnancy. You may however find a warm, not hot, bath can soothe your sore back. Try adding Epsom salt to a warm bath to help relieve pain.

Causes of Round Ligament Pain during Pregnancy

The round ligaments help to support the uterus. During pregnancy your uterus expands and places strain on your round ligament. This can produce a great deal of discomfort with sharp twinges between your hip bone and uterus. Movements such as coughing, sneezing or laughing activate these muscles quickly and can cause pain. Generally this pain is brief in duration.

Preventing Round Ligament Pain During Pregnancy

Practice prenatal yoga and regular stretching.

Get rest.

Use techniques such as those in the Pregnancy Pain Relief book.

Be sure to drink plenty of water.

Make sure you are getting adequate calcium and magnesium in your diet.

If you know you are going to sneeze or cough bend and flex your hips. There will be less strain on the round ligament if you are bent.

Try bringing your knees up toward your chest.

Change positions slowly to prevent the ligaments from contracting as much.

Use a pregnancy pillow at night to help relax your body as much as possible.

Treatment for Round Ligament Pain During Pregnancy

See a massage therapist, chiropractor or acupuncturist.

Take a warm bath.

Pregnancy Pain Relief techniques.

Try a pregnancy support belt.

When You Should Call Your Doctor
